When Jesper and I were talking about getting engaged, I made it very clear that it was important to me to use a family diamond. My late maternal grandmother designed jewelry, and I wanted to honor her and her love of art in my ring. So while I won’t go into the personal details of how he actually proposed, the short story is Jesper proposed without my engagement ring in the sweetest manner possible.
I instead flew to California and designed my engagement ring with my mom. I told you, very unconventional. But it was very me and a moment that I really cherish a lot. To me, the ring very much symbolizes my love story with Jesper but it also signifies who I am as a creator and my family history.
I had never really dreamt of the ring, and when the time came closer I began pinning rings on Pinterest, screenshotting ones I saw on instagram and sent them to my friends, but none of them really felt like the one.
I had only a few wishes for my ring:
- Something pretty and sparkly
- Statement yet practical to wear every day
- Unique
- Timeless
My mom and I went to a local jewelry shop, bringing my grandmother’s original ring. Side note: My grandma had large knuckles so most of her rings were enormous, so this ring, as gorgeous as it was, would forever be sitting in a box because my finger was so much smaller, I figured this was a good diamond to use.
So ecstatic to be engaged!
The first thing the jeweler had to do was to authenticate the diamond and mark any imperfections or scratches it may have. Apparently it is not uncommon for people to receive a family heirloom diamond that isn’t in fact a real diamond. They also have to mark down any imperfections or scratches so that they can evaluate the worth for insurance purposes and to make sure that it is strong enough to be reset a new ring.
Meanwhile, I examined different settings that my diamond could be placed into. I went back and forth between a square shape, cushion cut, and the round diamond halo ring. I ultimately went with the round diamond halo, with a simple white gold band.
I’m so happy that I was able to treasure this moment with my mom.
