Denmark is a unique place where very quickly you can go from the middle of the bustling city to the countryside. I’m talking all in a matter of a few miles. There are forests next to the ocean next to the city, all connected easily via bike lanes and trails. Last week, my close friend and I cycled to Furesø.
Shocking to me, Furesø was maybe 1-2 miles outside of the town where my great grandmother lived (Kongens Lyngby), which I had visited as a kid and the same town I studied in for two years. I seriously had no idea, something so idyllic was so close, yet I was not one bit surprised. All along the last bit of our loop there were not only lush rolling hills (Denmark is known for its extreme flatness) but also in true Danish fashion, there were ice cream stands along the side of the road. We ended up going further into this forest to the tip of a lake where there was even a sit down cafe with craft beers and amazing ice cream. I got 3 scoops. #noregrets.
The Details
Distance: 30.98km
Elevation Gain: 152m
Time: 1h27ish minutes each way (riding time)
It is also possible to canoe up there in and around the lake, which I also highly recommend.
We stopped at a cute lakeside cafe called Gamle Have Den where I shamelessly awarded myself 3 scoops of ice cream and some french fries (unfortunately, not pictured, but oh so delicious).

This afternoon I’ll be heading down to find one of the Thomas Dambo’s newest trolls in Amager’s nature park. Stay tuned!
