I love a good gin and tonic. I have very vivid memories of my parents drinking them out in my grandparent’s backyard on our family vacations in Minnesota. My husband and I have been going to the gin festival in Copenhagen for 3 years and have definitely had our share. (You can read why I love them here on question No. 4. )
During this time of social distancing, we have been making a point of creating a distinction between the work week and the weekend because let’s be real, all the days are blurring together.
I wanted to share my favorite way to spruce up your weekend and make you feel fancy even if in reality you’re not going to change out of those sweats you put on yesterday and not leave your couch. My philosophy is that if we’re gonna have to stay inside, let’s at least make the most of it.
Follow along for an easy but oh so delicious, Rose Gin + Tonic!
Prep.
First up you gotta get setup. The best part about a gin and tonic is that they actually require no real tools except for a glass — the rest of the items really are for show and to make me feel more adult. Gather ice, your favorite gin, and any tonic you have (we are using store brand tonic, but more on that in the next section). Finish prepping your glass by placing ice in it. (If you don’t have ice, frozen fruit also works quite nicely.)
Tip: Place a photo of someone you’d love to share your G+T with that you can’t physically be with because of the lockdown. This week we added this photo of my mama when she was my age!
Pour.
Now its time to get mixing! Pour in 2cl of gin. We are using a Nordic Gin with Akvavit botanicals produced by Nordic Spirits Lab. Top off the gin with your tonic.
Tip: If you don’t have any specialty tonics on hand, pour your tonic into a shaker with a bit of lime juice.
Lime juice is easy to keep on hand and doesn’t go bad quickly, which is very convenient while staying at home these days. It also adds that nice citrus flavor to your libation, thus elevating that store brand tonic.
Pizazz.
Now more than ever, its important to treat yo self. #selfcare am I right? So take this opportunity to garnish your gin and tonic. We were gifted these pretty edible roses in a gin garnish set for our wedding anniversary last year and thought this was the perfect occasion to bring them out. If you don’t have something similar, you can use fresh fruit or frozen berries from your morning smoothie supplies. It not only adds a bit of extra flavor but it also adds some color, which definitely makes me feel fancy.
Voila, you’re done.
Now take a moment to enjoy your drink, call a friend, or try a new quarantine challenge with your S.O. (or roommate)!
Enjoy.
